DVD Cloner VI Review

Windows Vista Compatible

DVD Cloner VI is a new version of the long-standing DVD Cloner software, and this new iteration stands among the best DVD copy software available in the market. There are, however, a few shortcomings that we feel takes away from the general quality of this product and relegates it to third place in our ranking of DVD copy software programs.

Anyone with a large collection of DVDs that they wish to backup or copy onto their hard drives will certainly appreciate the ability of DVD Cloner VI to copy just about any form of DVD currently in existence. With the sheer number of encoding formats, and geographical encoding, many DVD copy software programs are only able to copy certain formats and DVDs from certain regions. DVD Cloner VI is able to copy and burn all of these DVD types, however, making it an excellent choice for those who collections span DVDs of all types from different places.

In addition to that, DVD Cloner VI also has a full set of features that make it an excellent tool for copying and burning DVDs. These features include built-in CSS decryption capabilities, high quality video compression, Dual Layer support, and episodic support. These are all great features to have in DVD copy software, and they each deal with a particular aspect of copying and burning DVDs, making the process easier and allowing you to create DVD copies of greater quality.

The copies that are made using DVD Cloner VI are excellent. If you choose to create a copy of a DVD without any video compression, then the video quality on the copied DVD and that on the original DVD are nearly indistinguishable. This is even the case if you choose to make use of the video compression encoding available with DVD Cloner VI. With such video compression, the resulting copied file is smaller, although there should technically be a loss in quality of the video. With DVD Cloner VI, this loss in quality is so small that it will not be apparent on anything short of an enormous widescreen television. The video compression is useful, however, for those who wish to copy the contents of DVDs to their hard drives, thus doing away with the need for a physical disc. This is also useful for those who wish to backup their DVD collections on external hard drives, as space is always a concern for those who have large collections of DVDs to backup.

DVD Cloner VI also supports the copying and burning of Blu-Ray discs, something that the 2 versions of 1Click DVD Copy software do not support. Blu-Ray discs have been touted as the future of digital media storage, superseding the DVD in popularity and widespread use. Designed by Sony, Blu-Ray discs are able to store up to a maximum of 50 gigabytes of information. This is almost six times the amount of raw information that can be stored on a regular DVD. The greater storage capacity of Blu-Ray discs have also allowed movie producers to distribute high-definition movies that are much clearer and have much better video quality, but take up much more space than regular videos do. For those who appreciate the video quality to be found with movies contained on Blu-Ray discs, then DVD Cloner VI is definitely the program for you.

One of the problems that you might encounter with DVD Cloner VI that you will not find with our two top-ranking DVD copy programs (1Click DVD Copy 5 and 1Click DVD Copy Pro), is that DVD Cloner VI straddles the fine line between legality and illegality. The problem lies in the built-in decryption tool. According to intellectual copyright law, the reproduction of any copyrighted material is illegal, and the circumvention of any digital protection surrounding copyrighted material is also illegal. The decryption program included with DVD Cloner VI could very well be considered illegal, although the case is still being fought between software manufacturers and the entertainment industry. This is one point you should remember, especially if you plan on making copies of DVDs that are protected by digital encryption.

Available for online download at $59.99 USD, the price of DVD Cloner VI falls within the range that most quality DVD copy software is priced at, making it neither a bargain nor outrageously priced. For software of this quality, we feel that it is priced just right or perhaps that it is slightly overpriced, due to the shortcomings in customer service support by the company. All in all, however, DVD Cloner VI is still an excellent piece of DVD copy software that you should definitely have on your list of potentials if you are out hunting for DVD copy software to purchase.
